1099 Short Definition
A Form 1099 is filed with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and is an informational tax form. When payments need to be reported to the IRS, often one of the 1099s is used.
Expanded Definition
There is a series of 1099 forms. These include 1099-R for payments from pension plans, 1099-NEC for independent contractors, Form 1099-MISC for certain vendor payments, etc.. The 1099-NEC may be the most familiar and is a tax form primarily used to show earnings for a non-employee.
