Form 1096 is a transmittal form that the IRS requires when submitting Forms 1099-NEC or other information returns.

Expanded Definition
Although electronic filing can be used to submit information forms to the IRS, transmittal by mail is also allowed with Form 1096. The most common information form is the 1099-NEC that is used to report payments to independent contractors.
