DUNS Number Definition

Short Definition
A DUNS (Data Universal Numbering System) number is a unique nine-digit identification number, issued by Dun & Bradstreet (D&B) to businesses around the world.

Extended Definition
Businesses can apply for a DUNS number (free) by submitting their financial and business information to D&B. This process establishes an account for the business and a credit rating, similar to consumer credit bureaus like Experian. Financial institutions, government agencies, other businesses, etc., can purchase credit reports in an effort to check the credibility of registered businesses.
