Term Definition:
A specific amount of time afforded to an employee due to the death of a family member or a close personal friend. Bereavement leave may be paid or unpaid, and it is not a mandatory benefit.
Extended Definition:
The amount of time off given to an employee on approved bereavement leave depends on the company policy. On average, many companies provide three business days off for bereavement time for immediate family members. Often, this leave is in addition to any paid time off and sick leave afforded to the employee.
